Introduction
This book is intended for students who have become familiar with basic reading skills in Developing Reading Proficiency I, as well as for students interested in building their general reading proficiency. Each unit is composed of a main reading passage, comprehension questions, and vocabulary exercises.
Before each unit there is a list of goals and objectives. The unit starts with a Preview and Skimming section to get the student thinking about a topic then lead on to a reading text, followed by exercises.
The reading texts are mostly unedited excerpts taken from contemporary textbooks, journals, magazines, or other sources which might be of general interest to university students. Effort has been made to include as many discourse types like narrative, exposition, discussion and instruction as possible in order to acquaint the student with different kinds of reading found in stories, cookbooks, newspapers, poetry, or discussions related to such fields like psychology and sociology. The units build from the relatively simple to the more difficult, so the student can develop his knowledge of concepts, vocabulary, and discourse as they progress through the book.
There are three kinds of comprehension questions in each unit: a. True/False questions are given immediately after each test. These questions direct the student’s attention to key points in each text, and check his general understanding of the content.
