Introduction
To be a good reader, we, first, need to know what reading is; in other words, we need to have a clear definition of reading and the reading process. Unfortunately, however, there is no single, widely-accepted definition of reading. Various teachers, inspired by similar and dissimilar schooling and led by their personal convictions, might possess slightly or drastically different views of what reading really is. Whatever their views, however, almost all agree that we read mainly because we want to get something out of the writing: the message or the meaning.
In this book, therefore, it is assumed that reading has one dominant purpose, i.e. to derive message or meaning out of a text. But what is a message? To best answer this question, we’d better view reading as an act of communication between a writer and a reader. The writer has a message in mind – a fact, an idea, a feeling, etc – and wants someone else to share it. To start this communication process, the writer must put the message into words to make it accessible to the mind of another person who reads it. If the reader succeeds in understanding the message intended by the writer, we can conclude that the communication process is complete.
